Jeongseon Fifth-day Market is a representative traditional market in Korea. Opening on dates ending in a 2 or 7, the marketplace is crowded with both locals and visitors alike. The local vendors sell produce and other agricultural products and manufactured goods. While the market was very active during the peak of the coal mining industry, the market faced a sharp decline after its end. However, in 1999, a special tourist train begin operating, taking tourists from Seoul to the market. Thanks to this, the current A-Train, the market is thriving. Also called the Jeongseon Arirang Market, visitors can enjoy performances of this intangible cultural heritage as well as taste the local foods. While the market is open every day, it is most active on days of the fifth-day market, and on Saturdays.
