The Sokcho Museum is a cultural experience center where visitors can learn about and experience Sokcho’s history, culture, and natural environment, covering from prehistoric times to modern times. It displays artifacts related to regional tradition and culture, the fishing village culture, which has been established based on Seoraksan Mountain and the East Sea, and the culture of the displaced people who arrived during the Korean War. The museum’s permanent exhibition halls are divided into four halls. Exhibition Hall 1 introduces Sokcho’s natural environment and cultural characteristics; Exhibition Hall 2 displays the aspects of a fishing village formed on the seaside and life of the displaced people; the Exhibition Hall 3 provides diverse traditional culture experiences for children; and the Balhae History Hall. The cultural town of the displaced people is also situated the outside of the museum that displays real houses built with the construction styles of North Korean regions, such as Gaeseong House, Pyeongyang House, and Hwanghae-do House, and also offer accommodation experience. It also includes the reproduction of Cheongho-dong Alley, where refugees of the Korean War arrived from North Korea lived, and the Sokcho Station building that was demolished in 1978. The Balhae History Hall provides information about Balhae, which once reigned the areas of Manchuria and the northern part of the Korean peninsula, through photos and videos of historic sites, artifacts, and the explanation about ancient tomb culture of Balhae.
